Canon A3100 Review

Canon continues to push its A series digital cameras towards “fun” photography in introducing the Canon A3100, by altogether removing the AA-size battery power source, a feature this line has been well known for before. This 12 megapixel Canon camera, as well as the A3000 IS, its 10 megapixel linemate, uses a rechargeable power source that’s a lithium ion battery.

In basic terms, this Canon A3100 review can be stated in three sentences:

What’s good: The Canon A3100 has excellent optical image stabilization, and produces high-quality photos for its class.

What’s bad: It’s got a weak feature set, and it has a cheap feel for its price.

The bottom line: The Canon PowerShot A3100 IS is an excellent point-and-shoot digital camera, but don’t expect it to do much more than that.

The Canon A3100’s size falls between the chubby A-series models using the old AA-batteries, and the ultra-compact digital camera bodies of the SD-series Digital Elphs. It’s made of plastic and you can choose between three colors, blue, silver, and red and it’s small enough to fit in your handbag or pants pocket.

It looks better than what its price tag suggests, but when you pick it up it will feel like a compact digital camera at the lower end of the price scale. The lens is not wide angle, but begins at a wider aperture than most of its budget competition, and it zooms out a little farther also. The Canon Powershot A3100 also has a better 2.7 inch LCD than most of the competition as well, and it’s bright enough that you can use it in direct sunlight even with reflections from the screen. And having the optical image stabilization feature is a definite advantage too.

You get basic point-and-shoot controls, where you’ll find the power button, shooting mode dial, and shutter release on top. They’re all flush but well spaced. It’s just a matter of using it a little to get a good feel of it, so you won’t accidentally turn the digital camera off when taking a picture. You’ll find the mode dial a little stiff, and rotating it is a little hard at first because of its positioning in the body. The markings and back panel controls are a bit bigger than what you’ll find on a Digital Elph.

You’ll find a zoom rocker at the top, followed by the buttons for Canon’s Face Select feature, which consists of: Display and menu buttons; select button with four-way control pad; and playback. The Canon A3100 IS Face Select works with its face detection feature that lets you focus on one person in a group of people. Two tabs of general settings can be pulled up using the Menu button, while you use the select button to open the shooting mode-specific options.

Overall, the Canon A3100 is simple, easy to control, easy to use for beginners after a little use, and delivers excellent photos. It’s a very good digital camera for its price.

The Canon A3100

Canon is bent on pushing the trend towards “fun and easy” photography on its A-series Canon cameras with its introduction of the Canon A3100. Canon’s latest move is abandoning a familiar feature this line was known for – the AA-size battery power source. The 12 megapixel Canon Powershot A3100 IS digital camera takes its power from a lithium ion rechargeable battery, which is also the power source for the A3000 IS, its 10 megapixel linemate.

As early as 2008, the manual controls in the A-series Canon cameras started to disappear, together with optical viewfinders. This latest change to a rechargeable battery will have completed the transformation to a more affordable, bigger version of Canon digital Elphs. The company hasn’t entirely removed the AA batteries from its A-series line up, but its numbers continue to dwindle.

In a nutshell, this is what my Canon A3100 review can say:

The good: In its class, the Canon A3100 IS possesses excellent photo quality, and optical image stabilization for its class.

The bad: For its price, it’s a got a feel as though it’s a cheaper model, and a weak feature set.

Bottom line: The Canon PowerShot A3100 IS is still an excellent point-and-shoot digital camera, in spite of its simplicity.

The Canon A3100 is also budget-friendly, and you won’t find a shortage of people who want excellent photo quality at an affordable cost, and a more compact body than the typical model in this series. That’s really the bottom line with the Canon Powershot A3100.
Consider this if you’re still choosing between the A3000 and the Canon A3100: For a little extra $30, the Canon A3100 IS comes with a higher resolution, you get  3 color choices, and its effective ISO begins at ISO 80 while the A3000 starts at ISO100. You get a little better quality pictures as well, since the higher resolution allows you to use this Canon camera for printing and cropping. Basically, the A3100 rating is higher overall than the A3000 rating.

I end this Canon A3100 review by saying that the Canon PowerShot A3100 is a very good, compact, solid camera for your money. It’s definitely worth the extra $30 over the A3000. You can’t get excited about this Canon camera beyond its excellent optical image stabilization, and high-quality snapshots. But if all you want is to point and shoot, and get excellent photos, the Canon A3100 is the camera for you. Thank you for taking the time in reading my a3100 review.

The Canon A3100 Takes You a Step Higher

In this short Canon A3100 review you will find that the Canon A3100 takes you a step higher from an entry level digital camera because of its design and build. It takes very good pictures in almost any situation and has solid features, though not spectacular. The Canon Powershot A3100 IS feels good when handled and its simple design is very likeable. But the most important thing about this Canon camera is the high quality of the pictures it delivers. There are very few negatives, and if you’re just looking for a great point and shoot digital camera then this is the one for you.
Outdoor scenic shots in bright light

I’m very happy with the photos of outdoor scenic shots in bright light. The pictures have deep colours and focusing is snap and always sharp. The Canon A3100 IS has little purple fringing here and there, and shots can be a bit hazy when shooting white objects caught by the sun. But these are minor issues and unlikely to cause glitches, particularly if your print sizes are reasonable. My outdoor scenes, with the lens zoomed out displays very sharply, and are much better than what I used to see.

I am very happy with the outdoor scenic shots. Focusing is consistently sharp and the photos have plenty of deep colours to them. Here and there I can detect some purple fringing and the shots can be slightly hazy around white objects that are caught by the sun. These are relatively minor issues and they are unlikely to cause much of a problem especially if you keep print sizes reasonable. 

The sharpness displayed in my outdoor scene where the lens is zoomed out is much better than I am used to seeing.

Portraits

All portrait shots work well. Maybe the Canon Powershot A3100 can conjure up some more warmth in outdoor portraits, but that’s not really an issue because it really performs this very well. You can’t beat Canon digital cameras when it comes to using flash. You can see from this example that the flash unit emits light strong enough to illuminate the whole photo, and subtle enough to make sure the amount of color is maximized and retained in the picture. Indoor portraits taken without the flash also comes out very well. The Canon A3100 lights the shot well, produces high levels of definition, and keeps the noise levels down.

Colours, Macro, and Noise

The Canon A3100 also produces strong results with macro shots – my macro shots come out very crisp with this digital camera. The colors are accurate and it handles artificial lighting quite well. It’s capable of delivering strong, vivid colors without overpowering the scenes. Foliage stands out particularly well, with the deeper greens displayed in my scene shots. Noise control is as good as can be expected from a compact digital camera. My indoor portrait shots show very little noise.

Summary

When it comes down to picture quality, the Canon A3100 is above average with its competition. It handles most scenes well and delivers vivid, colourful shots.
